The Ace Up Afrobeats’ Sleeve

Chuks Austine popularly known as Superstar Ace is aptly named. For one, the Nigerian born singer certainly looks the part of a superstar – the tattoos, the jewellery, the hairstyle, as well as the fashion choices which stand him out in most settings. But let’s face it, so do a lot of other people.

Simply put, merely looking like a superstar in the music industry has never been enough, as with an appreciable fashion sense, or resources – such as the right amount of money, or an experienced stylist, – virtually anyone can look like one (See: Instagram). An artist’s greatest asset is his music, and without a doubt, Superstar Ace’s trump card is his effortlessly unique brand of Afrobeats.

The music video to the artist’s Runtown-assisted debut single (since signing with Warner SA) Fundamental, opens with Ace overlooking a serene woodland, followed by an accompanying shot of a warm, sunny horizon. It functions as an inadvertent metaphor for the artist’s music, which can be effectively described as a ‘vibe’. He also never seems particularly perturbed or in a rush.

Fundamental dropped in January 2019 but sounds every bit as fresh as any recent release. His follow-up single, Summertime featuring South African singer, Anatii is a stellar record which sounds perfectly suited to a cookout or late-night drive in the summer. His latest single, Superman also features a familiar afrobeats sound, but stands out due to Ace’s stellar delivery and witty lines sung in English, Pidgin and Yoruba. It is also produced by Nigerian producer, Phantom, who produced Burna Boy’s Ye.
